Our founder, Bob Cumming, began work on his folk-tale opera Rumpelstiltskin in his senior year at Lincoln (Nebraska) High School and finished it while a student at Nebraska Wesleyan University. It was first performed in 1952 at First Plymouth Congretational Church in Lincoln as a benefit for their youth league with soloists from the church choir and his friends. Later it had many successful performances in New York City and several New England towns.
In 1993, CG&SS revived it for four performances at the old Middletown High School on November 5-7, with orchestral arrangements by John Dreslin. Leighton Phraner played the demanding title role of the magical dwarf while hunched over with his knees almost touching the floor.

Thank you to Dick Tecca and Don Shirer for making this possible (“reflect, reflect!”). It has given Leighton much pleasure to witness it. Wish you could all witness the dance sequence
May 11th, 2016 at 9:06 am(choreographed by Lesley Gallagher) that takes up fifteen minutes at the opening of Act Two.
And Rump was done as a double-bill with Trial by Jury. These artists are still with us, for which I’m thankful–unlike the cast of our world premiere of Jonathan Strong’s “Thespis.”
So many of them have left our company. like Pearce Beskin, Rose Mary Loffredo, Barbara Henderson, Thelma Johnson, Dorothy Steinkamp, Erwin Steinkamp, Andrew Strothers.
Then there are G&S, from whom 24 quotes appear, in addition to numerous names of characters in the name-guessing scene. Excelsior!
