Claire McCarthy & Henry Cox

Our Featured Cast Members this month are Claire McCarthy and Henry Cox, two of our younger but more active performers.

Henry is amazed by how Modern the Major General is.

Princess Ida marks Henry Cox’s 2nd show with the Connecticut Gilbert and Sullivan Society in which he will be playing the role of Cyril. He will be a senior at St. Bernard High School, Montville next year. He appeared in last year’s Pirates of Penzance as Samuel, the pirate lieutenant. At St. Bernard he has played the role of Captain Von Trapp in Sound of Music, the angel Clarence in A Wonderful Life, Horton the Elephant in Seussical and Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol.

Claire importunes the bobbies to”Go and Die!”

Claire McCarthy is also a student at St. Bernard High School and is entering her junior year. This is her fourth appearance with CG&SS. She made her debut in the chorus of the 2014 production of Gondoliers, and also sang chorus in 2015’s Iolanthe. In last year’s Pirates she undertook her first principal role as Kate and in this year’s Princess Ida she will be portraying Melissa. She has always enjoyed performing and being involved with music. While performing with The Saints Players, the drama club at her school, she recently portrayed the Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music. Her other stage experiences include Seussical, Camelot, Makin’ Room and A King is Coming to town. She also is an accomplished soprano soloist and has appeared with a number of performing groups. Claire hopes to pursue the study of music in college.

Both Henry and Claire represent the outreach from CG&SS to local schools, churches and vocal teachers to recruit young talent to contribute youthful zest to our productions and also to encourage the future continuance of future audiences and players for the appreciation of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. We salute them and the many other young people who will be performing with us now and in the future.
